5 Signs Your Hair Needs Professional Attention, Not Just a Trim

Tuesday 18 August 2026·By Fat Heads

Most people wait far too long between noticing something's off with their hair and actually doing something about it. Fat Heads, based on Mosley Street in Newcastle city centre, sees the same pattern often: small issues left to build up until a much bigger fix is needed. Here are five signs worth acting on sooner rather than later.

5. Split ends that keep creeping further up the hair shaft

A few split ends are normal, but when they keep reappearing higher up the length despite regular trims, it usually means the hair is more damaged than a standard cut is addressing. Heat styling, chemical treatments, and even rough towel-drying all contribute to this over time. Left unaddressed, splits travel further up the shaft and eventually can't be fixed with anything short of cutting back to healthy hair.

4. Colour that's grown out unevenly or gone brassy

Colour that fades unevenly, develops brassy or off tones, or shows a harsh line at the regrowth is a sign the original colour service or the aftercare products being used at home aren't quite right for your hair. This is worth addressing with a professional rather than attempting a home box-dye fix, which can make colour correction considerably harder and more expensive later. Catching it early, before it grows out too far, keeps the fix simpler.

3. A scalp that's persistently itchy, flaky, or tender

Occasional dryness is common, especially in colder months, but a scalp that's consistently itchy, flaky, or sore is worth getting looked at rather than just switching shampoos repeatedly. It could be product build-up, an underlying scalp condition, or a reaction to something in your current routine. A stylist can often spot the difference and advise whether it's something to treat at home or worth seeing a GP or dermatologist about.

2. Hair that won't hold a style no matter what you try

If styling that used to work suddenly isn't holding, that's often a sign of damage affecting the hair's structure, product build-up weighing hair down, or simply a cut that's grown out and lost its shape. It's rarely solved by buying yet another product without addressing the underlying cause. A proper consultation can identify which of these is actually going on rather than guessing.

1. Noticeable thinning or increased shedding

Some shedding is completely normal, but a noticeable increase, more hair in the brush, in the shower drain, or visibly thinner areas, is the sign worth taking most seriously. Causes range from stress and diet to hormonal changes and scalp health, and it's not always something a salon alone can fully resolve. A stylist can advise on hair-healthy practices and flag when it's worth seeing a doctor as well.

What to do about it

None of these signs mean something has gone seriously wrong, but all of them respond better to attention sooner rather than being left to worsen. A proper consultation, rather than a guess at home, is the quickest way to work out what's actually going on and what to do about it. If any of the above sounds familiar, it's worth booking in for a proper look rather than waiting for the next scheduled trim.

Fat Heads is based at Churchill House, 12 Mosley Street, in Newcastle upon Tyne city centre, offering hair salon services to the local area. Whatever's brought you to read this, a conversation with a stylist is the sensible next step before trying to fix it alone.
