The Salmon Arm Bay Nature Enhancement Society (SABNES) looks after one of BC's most important migratory bird estuaries — the foreshore where the Salmon River meets Shuswap Lake. Formed in 1986, the society manages the Salmon Arm Bay nature area as a conservancy: roughly 40 hectares of wetland, four kilometres of protected shoreline, boardwalks and the Foreshore (Raven) Trail, bird blinds, and a summer Nature Centre near the wharf. It is prime habitat for western grebes and thousands of migrating shorebirds.
It is also an easy, beautiful walk from downtown — bring binoculars, stay on the trails to protect nesting birds, and check the dog rules, which change during nesting season. If SABNES volunteers would like a hand telling this bay's story, The Shuswap Loop features local conservation work in our stories and spotlights — get in touch.
